Open the drawer where your household keeps old cables. Somewhere in there sits a charger for a phone you sold years ago, a cable with a connector nothing uses anymore, and at least one cord you keep “just in case”. Multiply that drawer by a few billion households and you have one of the fastest-growing waste streams on the planet.
The scale of it
The United Nations’ Global E-waste Monitor 2024 found that the world generated a record 62 million tonnes of electronic waste in 2022. Only 22 percent of it was formally collected and recycled. The report estimated that US$62 billion worth of recoverable natural resources went unreclaimed that year.
Chargers and cables are small, which is exactly why they slip through. Few people drive a single cable to a recycling centre. They go in the drawer, and eventually in the bin.
Regulators went after chargers first
The European Union targeted chargers directly. Its common charger rules, in force since 28 December 2024 for phones and many other devices and since 28 April 2026 for laptops, require USB-C charging and let shoppers buy devices without a bundled charger. The European Commission expects the rules to cut about 11,000 tonnes of discarded chargers every year.
That is a real reduction. It also shows the limit of regulation: it standardises the plug, but it cannot make you keep a cable longer.

The habit that matters most
Recycling helps, but the largest saving comes before anything reaches a recycling bin. Every accessory you do not have to replace is one that never becomes waste. Three habits cut the pile:
- Consolidate. One multi-port USB-C charger can replace several single-device bricks.
- Buy for durability. A cable that lasts five years replaces five that last one.
- Recycle properly. Many electronics retailers and local councils accept small electronics. Cables contain copper worth recovering.
Companies selling longevity
Some charging brands now pitch durability as their environmental argument. MAGFAST, a charging company based in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, is one. It offers a limited lifetime warranty on its Lux cables and says it certifies them to 25,000 bends. The company designs its chargers, stands and cables to work together as a system, arguing that fewer, better products produce less waste than a stream of cheap replacements.
MAGFAST also plants a tree for each product it sells through a partnership with Trees for the Future, a non-profit that works with farming families to plant trees. By the company’s count, that commitment has funded more than 600,000 trees.
Tree planting does not cancel out manufacturing. Every product still carries a footprint in materials, energy and shipping. The honest test for any “green” accessory is how long you will use it.
How to judge a sustainability claim
- Look for a long warranty. It is a durability promise with a cost attached.
- Check for standard connectors. USB-C and Qi2 keep an accessory useful as your devices change.
- Ask what happens at end of life. A brand that explains recycling or take-back has thought about it.
- Discount vague language. “Eco-friendly” on its own means nothing. Specific commitments with numbers mean something.
Start with the drawer
The simplest step costs nothing. Empty the drawer, test what works, keep the cables you use, and take the rest to an electronics recycling point. Then, the next time you buy, buy once.
